Abstract Article


My chosen article “Everyday memory errors in older adults” was written by Lynn Ossher, Kristen E. Flegal & Cindy Lustig, (2011). The reasoning for this article was that there being very few studies that document the types of frequency of memory errors that older adults make in everyday life.
The research findings in this article could possibly help future training programs target memory errors that are commonly experienced by older adults. This could suggest which types of memory errors can indicate cognitive declines of clinical concern.
The article explains how current culture suggests that memory failure amongst older adults is a common theme. It is socially acceptable that memory declines with age, which then causes individuals to become concerned with the possibility of onset dementia.
From the article you can learn that age differences in metamemory; this meaning the awareness of one’s own memory, what someone can remember and how confident they are in accurately remember that information. This is already well documented and studied, much less is studied about specific memory difficulties older adults face in everyday memory.

I would like to start by introducing what everyday memory is and its functions. EDM is incidental learning, knowledge that is formed as we experience life. It is important to understand firstly that EDM research differs a lot from traditional research which is intentional. This research focuses on the content of information recalled and not on the amount. It is also stemmed from goals and interest unlike traditional research which is often driven by experiments. To show more of an understanding of EDM, there are more specific areas such as Autobiographical Memory (AB) which concerns itself with experiences that an individual has formed and has a crucial significance to them. AB is more of a recollective experience from what the individual has retained which consist of memories. Previous everyday memory studies describe findings that can be applied to society.

Conclusion

Errors were mostly in the verbal category, errors which were related to reading and writing were largely prominent. This could be a result of highly educated individuals are more likely to participate in certain activities which expose them to such errors. To conclude this essay most studies often suggest the great importance in which everyday memory occurs, as well as the important factor that the context is considered a main variable when studying age, resulting in who will remember and who will have a memory error. Everyday memory form part of our unique sense of existence through our own experiences. Autobiographical memory is often seen to be more complex.
